Why Recycle

We have made significant investments into research and development of garnet recycling. Our multi-million dollar advanced garnet processing facility recycles garnet to ensure that strict sizing and purity is maintained to the highest standards. Garnet in a non-renewable natural resource and recycling ensures that this resource is used to its full potentials. Spent garnet has otherwise been dumped as industrial waste into landfills. Recycling is the environmentally responsible way of dealing with spent garnet.

Virgin vs Recycled

Purity

Mines often advertise that there garnet is around 98% pure which in fact is typically not true. Most garnet mines produce garnet in the lower 90 percentile of purity. Other “filler” minerals such as hornblende are difficult  to completely separate from garnet. The other “filler” minerals are not as hard and tough as garnet and typically shatter as soon as they make contact with the Waterjet stream.  When recycled the garnet will be free of these “filler” minerals and more densely packed with actual garnet.

Stronger Grains

Garnet grains often have what we call fracture plains or natural weak points. Although some grains do not have them, most do.  Weaker grains will have multiple fracture plains that can often break apart when first making contact with the Waterjet stream. These garnet grains will not be in the recycled garnet. Also through the cutting process grains often become sharper as pieces of the grain break off producing a sharper cutting edge.

Our recycling program is set in place to save our customers money. This program produces cost saving in the front end of purchase point and the back end of disposal, without sacrificing cutting performance. This gives our customers a completive advantage while also being environmentally responsible.
